Questions
“Alright sweetheart, let’s see what the Easter bunny brought you,” I said as Hannah enthusiastically ripped into the plastic cellophane surrounding her Easter basket filled with all sorts of toys and candy. Hannah had the largest smile on her face as I snapped loads of pictures of her opening her Easter basket.
“Sam, I think you have enough pictures to last the girl until she’s 30,” Jack complained as he came to sit beside me to watch Hannah examine the items she received scattered all over the living room floor. Putting an arm around my shoulders, he pulled me into his embrace, “Relax. Just enjoy, ‘cause she’s growing up so fast.”
Jack had a valid point. It seemed like yesterday I was changing dirty diapers and now she’s four and currently in her ‘questions’ phase. She is such a curious little girl and has to know everything about anything. Jack always says that she gets that from me, but I’ve learned that Jack is very intelligent, unlike everyone thinks.
A knock at the door yanked me out of my musings. Daniel had mentioned that he wanted to drop by this morning to bring Hannah a gift. I had told him it wasn’t necessary, but of course Daniel wouldn’t take no for an answer. Heading towards the door, Hannah sped past me as I reminded her to check who it was. “Who goes there?” my daughter giggled through the door.
“The Easter bunny,” explained the familiar voice.
Opening the door, Hannah screamed, “UNCLE DANNY!” jumping into his waiting arms. Trying to balance Hannah and pick up the giant pink stuffed bunny sitting on the porch, Daniel made his way into the house. “Hey Sam,” he said giving me a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey Daniel stop smooching on my wife,” Jack joked, coming up from behind me to shake Daniel’s hand. “Want some coffee Danny Boy?”
“Sure, I have 15 minutes before I have to head to the airport.” Daniel had a lecture in Chicago the next morning, which was why he wanted to stop buy before his flight. Daniel set Hannah on the floor as we made our way to the kitchen to grab some coffee. We took it into the living room to find Hannah studying an egg from her basket.
“Why does the Easter bunny give people eggs? Isn’t that from the birds?”
Daniel, of course, knew the answer. “In ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Persia eggs were dyed for spring festivals. In medieval Europe-”
“Daniel,” Jack interrupted, “She’s just a kid,” turning to Hannah he explained, “People a long time ago brought them for parties, so we have to keep up the tradition.”
“Like birthday cake?” She is certainly Jack’s daughter.
“Exactly!”

Lying in Jack’s arms that night, I thought back to Hannah’s question and the way Jack handled it. He always had a way of explaining things at there simplest, which was great for children. “You did a good job handling the egg question this morning.”
“Well since I took care of this one, you can take the girl problems, boys, and serious stuff.”
Giggling into his neck I answered, “I think not.”
“Hey it was worth a shot,” he retorted giving me a kiss on the head. “Until the next question…”
